Returning to his horror roots after firing Dominic Toretto and Co. into Hollywood’s all-important billion dollar club with Furious 7, James Wan is viewing The Conjuring 2 as much more than just a palette cleanser before inevitably moving on to the DC Extended Universe and, in particular, Aquaman.

As a matter of fact, in a spooky new featurette released today for the horror sequel, Wan outlines his own mission to redefine horror movies and the way they are perceived by both studios and the moviegoing masses. He’s off to quite the start already, presiding over a body of work that stretches back for more than a decade when the filmmaker broke onto the scene with Saw. It inspired countless torture porn offshoots, but none had the momentum to terrify viewers across eight mainline installments.

Reuniting with co-creator Leigh Whannell, Wan then continued his bloody streak through the Insidious franchise, before shifting focus to another horror series under the Blumhouse umbrella based on the true story of Harrisville. Three years ago, the original Conjuring not only shot past $300 million worldwide, but it laid the groundwork for a spinoff movie revolving around that grotesque, dead-eye doll, Annabelle. It’s getting a sequel of its own in 2016, but before that, it’s almost time to check in on Ed and Lorrain Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, respectively).

The Conjuring 2 will introduce moviegoers to the Enfield Poltergeist when James Wan sequel looms over theaters on June 9. David Thewlis, Franke Potente, and Madison Wolfe are among the cast.

The supernatural thriller brings to the screen another real case from the files of renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. Reprising their roles, Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson star as Lorraine and Ed Warren, who, in one of their most terrifying paranormal investigations, travel to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits.
