Klementieff’s fantastical being is one of the many new additions to the Guardians character roster – Elizabeth Debicki (Ayesha), Kurt Russell (Ego) and Sylvester Stallone (?) included – and we know from previous trailer reveals that her interactions with Peter Quill and the rest of the gang will range from mind-reading to an intergalactic tour guide. Revealing Star-Lord’s deepest, darkest secret isn’t Klementieff’s only port of call, though, after Gunn told ComicBook that, much like the Guardians of the Galaxy, Mantis is rendered “an outcast” among the stars.

She works for him, basically. That’s it. I think it’s very interesting to watch the relationship between Mantis and the other characters because, like them, she’s an outcast. I think the relationship between her and Drax is very interesting because they’re both complete oddballs. It’s more of a relationship to the group as a whole, but I think she relates a little bit more to Gamora and Drax then she does to Peter.

Mantis’ abilities have limits of their own, it seems, after Pom Klementieff revealed to the outlet that upon meeting Rocket Raccoon, Mantis is actually unable to establish any form of mental connection. Said she: “There is a funny moment, but I can’t really tell. She’s trying to connect with him and it doesn’t really work.” Perhaps it’s only limited to a select number of species? Or is there more here than meets the eye? We’ll find out for sure when James Gunn’s galactic sequel launches into theaters early next month.

After scoring off the charts in Marvel’s internal test screenings, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will finally be with us on May 5th.
