Thanks to the unprecedented move of Warner Bros. breaking the early reactions embargo a full seven weeks before the movie comes out, the hype for The Flash has jumped the gun to already climb to an all-time high. Or should that be jump the Gunn, seeing as the new co-CEO of DC Studios himself, James Gunn, has fully hopped about the Scarlet Speedster bandwagon, even as he promotes his last Marvel outing, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
With a new poster and a new trailer arriving via CinemaCon this Tuesday, the filmmaker kept himself busy by gushing over the Ezra Miller vehicle on Twitter, initially describing it as an “extraordinary film” before reassuring fans that “yes, the rumors are true, the movie is unbelievably good.” And yet his effusive praise for The Flash is making his continued radio silence on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom all the more notable.
While Gunn has likewise bestowed his favors upon Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Blue Beetle, two more DC productions made before he got to sit in the big chair, he’s yet to make a public admission about his feelings on Aquaman 2. Unfortunately, it’s hard not to read this as a “if you can’t think of anything nice to say…” situation, given the very worrying reports that have arrived about the Jason Momoa sequel in recent weeks.
On top of Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav apparently hating it, Lost Kingdom is believed to have been sent to countless test screenings in a bid to up its awful early audience scores, with reshoots apaarently failing to fix the issues. Seeing that The Flash actually looks set to deliver the goods, fans would love it if Aquaman 2 could conclude the original DCEU on a high when it arrives this December, but Gunn’s continued silence doesn’t bode well.
