Last week, fans started buzzing about an intriguing new easter egg discovered in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. In one scene, we’re shown that Ego had a child with a member of Mantis’ species – along with half of the rest of the universe, on his quest to create lots of Celestial offspring. As Ego’s Star-Lord’s father, it was suggested that this might mean that he’s Mantis’ dad as well, making the two Guardians siblings.
Now, director James Gunn has confirmed that it was indeed his intention to show that Ego had a relationship with another of Mantis’ people. However, he’s called the second part of the theory into doubt. As for whether this means we can assume that Ego is her father, Gunn suggested “you don’t necessarily need to infer anything else from this information.”
The director also revealed that this is not the BIG easter egg that’s hidden in the sequel. As fans know, Gunn claims that there’s at least one incredibly well-hidden gem in both Guardians movies that no one has figured out yet. Though folks have begun to wonder if he’s just trolling us at this point, he maintains that they really do exist.
So, can we rule out the idea that Mantis is Star-Lord’s half-sister? Possibly, but Gunn’s final comment does suggest that there’s some wiggle room there. “Whatever the case,” he says, “good find.” We could speculate that he’s hinting that this revelation will come out in 2020’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which we know is set to see the team return – even if most of them died in Avengers: Infinity War.
