In news that should surprise absolutely no one, James Gunn confirmed tonight that the title of the third Guardians of the Galaxy installment will indeed be Vol.3, following the vein traced by previous series entries Vol.2 and Vol.1.
The director made the announcement via Twitter while responding to a fan who had asked him if he would consider titling the third installment Guardians of the Galaxy.mp3, a clever play on words referencing the pivotal role of each soundtrack in the previous two volumes.
Unfortunately, Gunn wasn’t into the idea, instead saying the following:

Earlier this month, Chris Pratt, portrayer of Star-Lord – who you might recall plays a significant role in Avengers: Infinity War, the ramifications of which I’m certain you are aware of – let it slip that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 will begin shooting next year. Given that Gunn, who typically adheres to a tight three-year cycle when handling the franchise, recently narrowed the launch window to May 2020, Pratt’s confirmation that the project is gearing up for a production start date sometime in 2019 makes total sense.
Tethered to Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 has been described as “freakin’ amazing” by the Star-Lord actor, whose relationship with the MCU fandom is, shall we say, up in the air, at the moment? Something that he’s keenly aware of, for that matter.
However, if you’ve seen Infinity War, you’ll know that Thanos and his Snap of Doom wiped out the entire gang – save for Rocket – so the only question that remains is how Gunn will handle making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 when Star-Lord and co. have been killed off. Time will tell, but feel free to share your theories below.
