Amazon Studios is on the verge of landing North American distribution rights to James Gray’s Oscar-tipped adaptation of The Lost City of Z, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The pic, which is booked in to close out the New York Film Festival in October, is billed as a true-life period adventure film based on David Grann’s best-seller of the same name. Plotting course for the depths of the Amazon jungle, Grann’s story chronicles the mysterious disappearance of one Colonel Percival Fawcett, who spent his life searching near and far for the titular lost city. There’s currently no word of a release date at the time of writing, but with Amazon circling, we expect that to change very soon indeed.
On board for the Amazonian epic are King Arthur star Charlie Hunnam as Percy Fawcett, Spider-Man himself Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson and Sienna Miller.

James Gray’s emotionally and visually resplendent epic tells the story of Lieutenant Colonel Percy Fawcett (a remarkable Charlie Hunnam), the British military-man-turned-explorer whose search for a lost city deep in the Amazon grows into an increasingly feverish, decades-long magnificent obsession that takes a toll on his reputation, his home life with his wife (Sienna Miller) and children, and his very existence. Gray and cinematographer Darius Khondji cast quite a spell, exquisitely pitched between rapture and dizzying terror. Also starring Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland, The Lost City of Z represents a form of epic storytelling that has all but vanished from the landscape of modern cinema, and a rare level of artistry.
New York Film Festival 2016 is expected to kick off on September 30 and run through until October 16, when attendees will be invited into James Gray’s The Lost City of Z. With Amazon inching closer to landing a distribution deal, we should hear word of a theatrical release date sooner rather than later.
