Continuing the trend of absolutely terrible film titles, Paramount has apparently renamed Jack Ryan: Shadow One (an already awful title) to Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (an even worse choice). To be honest, I had no idea that they had made the change until I saw this first poster, which was released today.
Starring Chris Pine as the titular spy, the prequel film will explore the origins of the character, taking us back to when Ryan first joined the CIA. While there, he uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack and teams up with another agent (Kevin Costner) to save the day. Director Kenneth Branagh is set for the role of the primary villain and the female lead will be played by Keira Knightley.
Despite the really crummy title, I’m actually looking forward to this one. I’m a big fan of Pine as a leading man and I think that he did in excellent job in both Star Trek films, so I’m excited to see him carry another franchise. Plus, he’s got an excellent supporting cast along for the ride, which should make it easier for him to pull off the iconic role that’s been played in the past by actors like Harrison Ford and Alec Baldwin, among others.
It should also be noted that this particular story is not based on any of the Tom Clancy novels. It is totally original, which could bode well for the film.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit will hit theatres on December 25th, 2013. Check out the first poster below and let us know what you think in the comments section.
