At this time of year, practically every major theatrical release is discussed regarding its Oscar potential. It’s a trend that guarantees plenty of anticipated titles hit multiplexes when fall arrives, and this year is no exception. We’ve already had a stream of solid contenders eager to nab a nomination and it looks like Angelina Jolie might be keen to add another statuette to her mantlepiece. Prepare thyself, as her upcoming WWII tale, Unbroken, has wowed us with its second trailer.
No stranger to the perils humans endure, Jolie’s latest true story adaptation is based on the book by Laura Hillenbrand and follows one Louis Zamperini. During the height of the conflict, the former Olympic runner became a decorated war hero after his craft was struck down. Along with his fellow crewmen, he managed to live for several weeks on a raft, before the Japanese army carted them off to a prisoner of war camp.
It’s a gritty topic that promises to be a very inspiring tale. Based on this new preview, I’ve got faith that leading man Jack O’Connell will do Zamperini’s story justice. And it’s got absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the actor hails from my hometown. Nope, nothing at all.
Check out the trailer above, and prepare to be blown away by what could be a surefire award winner.
Unbroken opens in theatres on December 25th.
Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie directs and produces Unbroken, an epic drama that follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand’s (“Seabiscuit: An American Legend”) enormously popular book, Unbroken brings to the big screen Zamperini’s unbelievable and inspiring true story about the resilient power of the human spirit.
