He might only be 27 years of age, but Tom Holland has already delivered a string of knockout performances throughout his career, but there’s one that stands head and shoulders above the rest.
No, it isn’t his recurring turn as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man, but his unforgettable appearance on Lip Sync Battle, of course. Truly a showstopper for the ages, the star tore the house down and blew the roof off with his incendiary mimicry of Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” in what still remains one of the most viral and talked-about moments of his existence.
Funnily enough, Holland doesn’t quite seem to understand what all the fuss is about, even if he admitted to The Hollywood Reporter that it came during a pivotal moment in his life both personally and professionally.
“I’m proud of it. I like that it left a lasting impact. It was an amazing time. My life was changing before my eyes. Spider-Man was coming out. I was on the up. I was getting offers and turning them down for the first time, which was really crazy. I was meeting producers and directors and going to L.A. by myself. I was finally at that stage where I could say, ‘Can I bring my friends?’ And they’d say, ‘Yeah.’”
Despite that, he can’t quite wrap his head around the cultural longevity it managed to attain, revealing he still gets asked about it all the time.
“It is an interesting one. Because I’ve really worked hard in my career and I’ve really been calculated in deciding what it is I do and when I do it. And for all the movies that I’m incredibly proud of, the Lip Sync Battle is what I get the most compliments for.”
Regardless of what glory awaits Holland in the future, it’s going to take some beating to knock Lip Sync Battle from its pedestal as the absolute and undisputed pinnacle of his filmography.
