If Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark would have you believe, Avengers: Age of Ultron marks the end of the path he started us on. And while that phrase is rather apt given how Iron Man successfully laid the foundations for what is now the largest and most successful cinema franchise in history, let’s not kid ourselves: Joss Whedon’s sequel is merely the beginning.
With new characters and films mapped out all the way up to the year 2019 — a slate that includes the likes of Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel and Inhumans — the MCU is just kicking in to gear. But for all of Marvel’s far-reaching ambition, the sequel burdened with expectation is also the one poised to transition the on-screen universe from Phase Two to Phase Three.
Coming off the back of its show-stopping and indeed record-breaking predecessor, Age of Ultron has much riding on its burly, seemingly bulletproof shoulders. All signs so far indicate that Whedon may very well have another hit on his hands — albeit a much darker hit in the vein of Empire Strikes Back of The Godfather II. We’ll just have to wait until May to find out if the superhero sequel is worth its salt.
Avengers: Age of Ultron will open on May 1, 2015. For now, you can check out the new image from the film above and let us know whether or not you’re excited for Joss Whedon’s upcoming sequel in the comments section below.
