Per Twitter, the former District 9 director admitted that, hypothetically, he’d love to helm an Iron Man movie due to his love of the character. As you’ll be able to glean from the Tweet below, Blomkamp is under no illusion that a Marvel gig is on the cards, as there would be certain logistics to figure out before a Neill Blomkamp-directed Iron Man movie could become a reality.

For one, the South African filmmaker currently has his hands full with Oats Studios, an independent production banner that specializes in futuristic sci-fi shorts. It’s an outlet that has produced some truly engaging and thought-provoking content, harkening back to Blomkamp’s early days in the realm of science fiction (see: District 9). In fact, now that his proposed Alien sequel has been tossed to the wind in favor of Ridley Scott’s ongoing prequel saga, there have been rumblings of a potential District 10 launching into theaters in the not-so-distant future, which would certainly lead to some scheduling headaches between Blomkamp and Marvel.

Plus, with Robert Downey Jr.’s time in the MCU surely nearing an end, the long-term future of Iron Man is up for question. RDJ has signed on to reprise as Tony Stark for both Infinity War and the so-far untitled Avengers 4, but where Tony Stark goes from there is anyone’s guess. Perhaps Marvel will kill off one of its MCU mainstays? Time will tell.

Here’s that comment from Blomkamp:
