Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie – or Brangelina, as the tabloids so fetchingly refer to them as – are a modern-day Hollywood power couple, though in Jolie’s latest directorial effort By The Sea, the 1970s drama will see their marriage inadvertently sail toward a rough patch, as the intimate first trailer attests.
Following a couple in the throes of a personal crisis, By The Sea will chart the introspective journey of Roland (Pitt) and his wife Vanessa (Jolie), who make tracks for a serene seaside resort in order to face their demons. Rarely pictured in the same shot in this melancholic clip, Roland and Vanessa are evidently dealing with issues in isolation, with Jolie’s protagonist even popping a pill that we assume to be some form of anti-depressant.
What this first trailer does so effectively is juxtapose the picturesque beauty of the quaint village with shots of martial violence and abuse. There’s evidently something gnawing at Pitt and Jolie’s two leads, and it looks as though it’s a deep, raw issue that won’t be solved overnight.
After handling a big budget with last year’s Unbroken, Angelina Jolie’s intimate By The Sea will dock in theaters come November 13.
By the Sea follows an American writer named Roland (Pitt) and his wife, Vanessa (Jolie), who arrive in a tranquil and picturesque seaside resort in 1970s France, their marriage in apparent crisis. As they spend time with fellow travelers, including young newlyweds Lea (Laurent) and François (Poupaud) and village locals Michel (Arestrup) and Patrice (Bohringer), the couple begins to come to terms with unresolved issues in their own lives.
