Disney is currently making a big push for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in anticipation of its May 26th due date, and another round of character posters are here to prove it.
Coming to us by way of the IMP Awards (with a tip of the hat to Coming Soon), more than anything else, these one-sheets give the Mouse House another opportunity to pinpoint the five principal characters of Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning’s soft reboot: Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), Henry (Brenton Thwaites), Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), Salazar (Javier Bardem) and of course, Captain Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp’s all-around franchise mascot that will be in the midst of a self-imposed exile when Dead Men Tell No Tales opens late next month.
Having ventured onto Stranger Tides six years ago, Captain Jack essentially spends his days in hiding – that is, until the advent of Javier Bardem’s Salazar, who holds a grudge against Depp’s eccentric lead after he left him to wallow in the Devil’s Triangle all those years ago. Fast forward to now and Salazar has returned baying for blood, and his mere presence is enough to place every pirate on red alert. Dead men may tell no tales, but they have taken command of the sea, and we can’t wait to see what secrets Sandberg and Joachim Rønning have in store in a few weeks’ time.
Indeed, if On Stranger Tides was considered a disappointment – critically, at least, given the sequel still sailed all the way into Hollywood’s billion dollar club – then Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is a chance for Disney to course-correct its lucrative box office juggernaut. May 26th is the date for your diaries.
