Even before Avengers: Infinity War‘s arrival late last month, it was almost a foregone conclusion that the Marvel epic would crush box office records all over the globe.
And sure enough, after three weeks (and change) of absolute dominance, Infinity War‘s total cume has reached a staggering $1.675 billion worldwide, placing it just ahead of Jurassic World ($1.672 billion).
While unadjusted for inflation, that figure means Marvel’s Herculean blockbuster is now officially the biggest ever summer movie, as the only three films to gross higher than $2 billion (see: Avatar, Titanic and Star Wars: The Force Awakens) opened in and around the festive period, and therefore benefited from a break in school term.
This is simply the latest accolade to add to Infinity War‘s immense trophy cabinet, after the Joe and Anthony Russo tentpole leapfrogged The Avengers to become the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time.
It was a similar story in China, too, where Infinity War notched an impressive $76M opening (and a record $200M-plus weekend), in what is undoubtedly the world’s second-biggest movie market.
How high those numbers climb really depends on the competition from both Deadpool 2 and Solo: A Star Wars Story, which are expected to vie for the box office crown over the next two weeks. Will Infinity War hold strong? We’ll keep you posted as the numbers begin tumbling in.
Now that the Middle Kingdom has swung its doors open to Avengers: Infinity War, the sequel’s box office figures are slowly beginning to plateau, so it’s likely the MCU crossover will peak at around $1.8B or $1.9B – just shy of Hollywood’s exclusive two-billion dollar club.
