As is the case with any with any cinematic fad (especially in the case of horror films) we reach a saturation point, at which time the genre needs to be reworked to keep audiences interested. For zombies, we’ve had them be able to run (Dawn of the Dead), not actually be undead (28 Days Later), be funny (Zombieland) anchor a television series (The Walking Dead) and so on.
Fresh off 2011’s blacklist for best unproduced screenplays comes Maggie, a low-budget zombie drama which is eyeing Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass) for the titular character and Paddie Considine (Hot Fuzz) as her father. The synopsis for this indie offering goes like this:
As a “walking dead” virus spreads across the country, a farm family helps their eldest daughter come to terms with her infection as she slowly becomes a flesh-eating zombie.
Maggie sounds far more like an intimate, tragic drama than a blood-splattered actionier and though we’ve seen countless zombie offerings where a main character is bitten and eventually turns, that is rarely the focus of the story. In that regard, Maggie sounds far more intriguing.
Maggie is one of three upcoming horror projects for Moretz; she will star in this weekend’s Dark Shadows as well as take on the lead in the remake of Carrie.
Shooting on Maggie is expected to commence this September for a 2013 release.
