As Deadpool 3 nears its release, rumors (of it finding inspiration in The Flash) and arguments are breaking out over seemingly innocent comments, with the latest making Indiana Jones and his return in Dial of Destiny the target of the angry Marvel fandom.
MCU fans were busy getting all worked up over Deadpool – and more importantly – Wolverine’s arrival with Deadpool 3, happily gobbling up any and every possibility the rumor mill churned. It was then that Logan director James Mangold voluntarily attracted the collective ire of the fandom by lamenting Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine’s presence in the upcoming film and commenting on how future filmmakers are going to try and get “as much liquid as they can squeeze out of that rag, they’re going to try to.”
Right… well, safe to say almost no one found themselves nodding along to Mangold’s sentiments. In fact, Indiana Jones 5 is getting trashed for the director’s brief bout of honesty.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is all set to bring its titular swashbuckling hero back from retirement a full 15 years after Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. And as Mangold is the one helming this comeback, many can’t help but point out the hypocrisy.
Early reviews for the fifth and final Indiana Jones film haven’t been particularly kind, and Mangold’s Wolverine comments are definitely not doing it any favors.
Even Logan, which normally manages to remain on the positive side of reviews, is feeling the heat.
There is yet another irony — for someone who is bothered by the fact that Wolverine is going to repeatedly feature in future projects as long as he is a lucrative addition, he is forgetting that the ones he directed weren’t the first films to feature the Marvel superhero either.
While I am also not in favor of “squeezing” a character dry to the point that people are happy to bid them farewell, if done tastefully and with finesse — of which Marvel has been an expert — beloved names like Wolverine are welcome to be the highlight of every MCU film as far as the fandom is concerned.
