It’s been a long while since we’ve seen Will Smith in a movie that we didn’t quickly want to purge from our memory banks (here’s looking at you, Winter’s Tale and After Earth), but the actor’s upcoming comedy caper Focus looks (dare we say it) promising.
The Wolf of Wall Street breakout Margot Robbie also stars, and Crazy, Stupid, Love helmers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa both wrote and directed the pic. Now, Warner Bros. has unveiled a couple of images from Focus for your viewing pleasure. Check them out above and below.
Immediately, the shots evoke the same sexy, modern feel that Crazy, Stupid, Love possessed. And though we have yet to see a lick of footage from Focus, Smith and Robbie are two tremendously talented actors, so chances are that their chemistry will be off the charts. Though a repairing of Crazy, Stupid, Love leads Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone (which is what Ficarra and Requa originally had in mind before scheduling conflicts got in the way) would have been a thrill to watch, no one can argue that Smith and Robbie aren’t also intriguing choices.
The film centers on a well-established con man named Nicky (Smith), who becomes romantically entangled with younger con artist Jess (Robbie), only to break it off when things get too personal for the guarded professional. Years later, his latest scheme hits a snag when Jess, now a seasoned femme fatale in her own right, enters the picture.
Rodrigo Santoro and Gerald McRaney co-star in Focus, which opens on February 27th next year.
Will Smith stars as Nicky, a seasoned master of misdirection who becomes romantically involved with novice con artist Jess (Margot Robbie). As he’s teaching her the tricks of the trade, she gets too close for comfort and he abruptly breaks it off. Three years later, the former flame—now an accomplished femme fatale—shows up in Buenos Aires in the middle of the high stakes racecar circuit. In the midst of Nicky’s latest, very dangerous scheme, she throws his plans for a loop…and the consummate con man off his game.
