‘I knew from stanning’: ‘Wonka’ director explains why Timothée Chalamet didn’t need to audition

The actor got a free pass for fanboy reasons.

Timothee Chalamet is undoubtedly an accomplished actor and his potential, talent, and versatility have never gone unnoticed. A similar observation was made by filmmaker Paul King for his forthcoming release, Wonka. The director seems to have placed excessive faith in the Dune Star, to the extent of having hired him to play the titular character without any audition.

The subject was addressed by King in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, where he mentioned Chalamet’s past musical performances as enough evidence to assess his skills for the forthcoming movie.

“It was a straight offer because he’s great and he was the only person in my mind who could do it. But because he’s Timothée Chalamet and his life is so absurd, his high school performances are on YouTube and have hundreds of thousands of views. So I knew from stanning for Timmy Chalamet that he could sing and dance really well. And I knew that was in his arsenal, but I didn’t know how good he was. When I spoke to him he was quite keen. He’d done tap dancing in high school and he was like, ‘I’d quite like to show people I can do that.”

A glance at Chalamet’s background is enough for us to not challenge King’s choice here, as the Don’t Look Up alum’s musical talent is praiseworthy, and has earned a lot of accolades from such well-known names such as The Weekend, Frank Ocean, and Tyler the Creator to name a few.

The 27-year-old actor attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Arts, where he showcased his rapping talents and won hearts in the process. The institute also delivered immense talents in the form of various A-List Hollywood names such as Nicki Minaj, Ansel Elgort, and Awkwafina, indicating that brilliant performers have always been its legacy.

Thus, it can be said that laudable acting skills coupled with a history of musical talent will definitely make Chalamet a fitting choice for the upcoming adaptation of the iconic musical fantasy.

Wonka will be released on Dec. 15, 2023.
