The new Child’s Play trailer dropped earlier today, offering our best look yet at the reboot’s fresh take on the murderous little Chucky, and as it turns out, the internet is divided.
Much of the conversation seems focused on the remake’s tech-oriented storyline, which does away with the killer doll’s old voodoo origins and instead makes him a psychotic A.I. It’s a bold move to bring Chucky into the 21st century, but so far, not everyone is sold on the idea:
There's nothing scary about a robot doll with a bugged out AI. Fuckin remove the batteries. Toss it in the bath tub. Throw a magnet at it.
I've got zero interest in this Child's Play reboot, man, angry toddler sized robots aren't scary— Mister Hoody (@MisterHoody) April 18, 2019

Like instead of funding this just give Don Mancini more money to keep doing what he’s doing and maybe give the new Chucky films better distribution ??

The pieces for a Child’s Play remake to work are all there, and as a stand-alone horror movie the evil AI toy is great, but combined? It ain’t working. Best thing it has going for it is the cast

Second, based on the teaser and the trailer it looks like we’re getting killer toys (I could be wrong, Chucky could be controlling them). Just stick to the damn doll. This is not Maximum Overdrive this is Child’s Play.

At the same time, the new Child’s Play clearly has its supporters, and the new trailer even seems to have earned the curiosity of a few doubters:
Still skeptical, but the new Child’s Play is looking a little better with this new trailer pic.twitter.com/52dq8bxl7v

Just watched the Child's Play trailer. Not gonna lie, a Chucky that's also a Smart Device, connected to everything digital is the thing of nightmares. Smart way to modernize him as well. I'm interested.

The Child's Play remake trailer is out and honestly I'm impressed. Love what I'm seeing so far. Looks like a fresh modern spin on the story instead of a soulless rehash.

A.I. storyline aside, one of the main reasons that Lars Klevberg’s Child’s Play has been met with even more backlash than your average horror remake is the lack of involvement from series creator Don Mancini and original Chucky voice actor Brad Dourif. Complicating matters further is the fact that Mancini is currently working on a Chucky TV series that’s expected to maintain the original continuity of the franchise. The writer himself hasn’t been shy about voicing his objections to the reboot, and evidently, a lot of longtime fans feel the same.
Nonetheless, the Child’s Play remake seems to have some momentum behind it, and the recent announcement that Mark Hamill of Star Wars and Joker fame will be voicing the new Chucky has certainly helped matters. What’s more, Hamill isn’t the only noteworthy inclusion in a cast that also features Parks and Recreation actress Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry of Atlanta and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse fame.
Not too shabby, but we’ll find out if the new line-up can win the hearts of horror fans when Child’s Play hits theaters on June 21st, 2019.
