Out of all the sequels to raunchy hit comedies currently in the works (22 Jump Street, Bad Teacher 2, Ted 2), one of the ones I’m most cautiously curious about is Warner Bros.’ Horrible Bosses 2, which began filming in September.
Though the original was entertaining enough, the film’s one-joke premise did not, at first glance, appear to lend itself well to a follow-up. Director Sean Anders (That’s My Boy) has evidently come to terms with this and worked with returning writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to come up with a worthwhile hook. Today, Warner Bros. gave us our first idea of what Horrible Bosses 2 will look like.
Check out the official plot synopsis below:
Fed up with answering to higher-ups, Nick, Dale and Kurt decide to become their own bosses by launching their own business in “Horrible Bosses 2.” But a slick investor soon pulls the rug out from under them. Outplayed and desperate, and with no legal recourse, the three would-be entrepreneurs hatch a misguided plan to kidnap the investor’s adult son and ransom him to regain control of their company.
I’m immediately intrigued by the role reversal that Anders, Daley and Goldstein are setting up for Horrible Bosses 2, and with almost the entire cast of the original returning, there’s definitely enough talent involved for this comedy to have a strong shot at success.
Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Aniston are all confirmed to reprise their roles in the sequel. Additionally, Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine will join the cast, with Waltz playing the aforementioned ‘slick investor’ and Pine playing his (likely horrible) son.
One of the best things that Horrible Bosses had going for it was how it subverted expectations with its all-star cast – Aniston played way against type as a remarkably randy dentist, while Colin Farrell (whose character reached a decidedly final conclusion in the first film and so will not be reappearing) was almost unrecognizable under a thick, greasy comb-over. Pine is known for playing debonair heroes, so I can only hope that he’ll undergo a similarly radical transformation for his role in Horrible Bosses 2.

Horrible Bosses 2 will open wide on November 28th, 2014.
