An American Werewolf in London both amused and horrified audiences alike upon its release in 1981, although USĀ audiences took longer to warm to the film, despite the nationality of the main protagonist.

Director John Landis himself is American, but the film still has a predominantly British tone that may have alienated viewers from overseas. This is most evident in the credits, where Landis bizarrely inserted an end title congratulating Prince Charles and Princess Diana on their recent wedding. It would be a surprise to learn that British royalty even watch comic werewolf capers, let alone stick around until the credits have finished playing, but one must never presume.
