With the new Hellboy reboot less than four months away from release, Lionsgate has been getting generous with the marketing material for Neil Marshall’s upcoming film, uploading an assortment of stills to their official website earlier today.
In the gallery below, you’ll find new photos of David Harbour, who takes over from Ron Perlman as the title character, and fighting by his side are Sasha Lane of American Honey fame and Lost star Daniel Dae Kim as Alice Monaghan and Ben Daimio, respectively. Milla Jovovich, meanwhile, gets an image all to herself in the role of Nimue, a medieval sorceress who seeks to destroy mankind.
Overall, it’s not a bad line-up, even if plenty of fans still miss the old Perlman-led team, but these pictures are likely to be overshadowed by the film’s first trailer, which dropped yesterday and possibly did more harm than good in winning viewers over to the reboot.
In particular, after the project was sold to us as a darker take on the property than the Guillermo del Toro movies, fans were surprised by the comedic tone of the teaser, suggesting a violent action film more in the vein of the Deadpool flicks than the horror show we were expecting. If the social media response is anything to go by, then much of the internet doesn’t know what to think of next year’s release anymore, and many fans are starting to get nervous.
Nonetheless, the reactions to a test screening earlier this month painted Hellboy as a fun and “incredibly violent” watch with a strong cast, so maybe Lionsgate can earn some converts yet before the film hits theaters on April 12th, 2019.
