Two years ago, The Force Awakens was teeming with super-secret celebrity cameos – Simon Pegg (Unkar Plutt), Daniel Craig (Stormtrooper) and Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix)…to name but three – and Star Wars: The Last Jedi was no different.
Rian Johnson’s entry into that galaxy far, far away featured a plethora of familiar faces to look out for. Including, but not limited to, Tom Hardy, Gary Barlow, Justin Theroux, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (a regular cohort of Johnson’s, following Brick and Looper), Noah Segan, Rogue One director Gareth Edwards and Warwick Davis who, like Theroux, appears amid the crowds of Canto Bight, the flashy Star Wars equivalent of Las Vegas.
But wait a second, you’re probably saying right now. Where are Prince William and Harry on that list? Well, as we learned shortly before the film hit theaters, the brothers unfortunately had their cameo cut, meaning they didn’t make it into The Last Jedi, despite many people looking forward to seeing them show up. At the time, there was no reason given for why they’d been removed, but now, thanks to The Telegraph, we have an answer.
In short, the Brits got the axe because they were too tall. With William standing at 6’2″ and Harry at 6’1″, they proved to be a lot bigger than the Stormtroopers they were playing, with an anonymous source saying:
“Stormtroopers have to be exactly 5ft 11in. At the time we shot it I think the feeling was that the scene would make the final movie. The scene just didn’t work for the final cut so it was left out.”
Like we said above, the Princes would have portrayed two nondescript Stormtroopers seen standing inside a lift, “with one of them slapping Benicio del Toro’s character DJ on the bum as he, along with rebels Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega) infiltrated a secret base.” So, it wouldn’t have been a substantial role at all, but it’s still a shame that they didn’t make it into the movie in the end.
