Here’s Why The Joker Origin Film Is A Really, Really Bad Idea

Sheesh. It's like DC is the gift that keeps on gifting. Not only does it feel like there's a new DCEU film announcement every other week, but now the latest report is that there will be a standalone Joker movie, produced by Martin Scorsese and written by Todd Phillips, no less. This Clown Prince of Crime solo outing won't involve Jared Leto, however, as it'll explore the origins of a much younger Mr. J in a gritty, crime drama. But this doesn't mean that Leto has hung up the purple coat, though, as he's purportedly still signed on for Gotham City Sirens and Suicide Squad 2. Wait, what?

It Harms The DCEU’s Reputation

Now, hold up. Before you start telling us we’re Marvel fanboys and love the smell of the Disney money, hear us out here. The DCEU is only four movies in, with the fifth coming in November. To be discussing a non-DCEU superhero-related film already sounds like more of a backup plan in case the current universe doesn’t pan out.

Even if this isn’t the case, it doesn’t look good to someone standing on the outside and looking in. When the MCU started, Spider-Man wasn’t a part of the big picture; he was probably wanted, but no plans were made around him. Then, things changed, rights were negotiated, and he was incorporated into the universe. In other words, the MCU adapted and evolved where need be. The only certainty in life is change and studios need to be agile enough to roll with the blows and ride the waves.

In terms of a franchise, it’ll never be all smooth sailing – and there will come a time to pull the plug on it and reboot – but not so soon in its infancy. All these non-DCEU flicks will end up causing confusion to the casual fans and harm the universe’s reputation in the long run. As it is, most fans don’t seem to understand why the TV and film universes can’t co-exist. Now, imagine throwing an additional cinematic universe into the mix. If the plan is to confuse the audience, the filmmakers are doing a helluva job at it.
