Captain Marvel is sure to be full of many elements that will please fans. Not only does it see the debut of Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers and the return of Nick Fury and Phil Coulson, but it’ll also introduce the shapeshifting alien race the Skrulls into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time. And now, thanks to EW, we have our very first look at them.
While there’ve been some alteration to their appearance as compared to the comics, Marvel fans should easily recognize these as the Skrulls that’ve plagued the lives of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for decades on the page. Their distinctive green skin and pointed ears are intact and they’ve kept their usual purple clothing, though they now have a more robe-like appearance and lack the skull cap.

As was suspected, the outlet also revealed that Rogue One star Ben Mendelsohn’s playing the lead Skrull. He’s named Talos and described as a military leader “who spearheads a Skrull invasion of Earth.” And while it hasn’t been confirmed as yet, we presume that Mendelsohn can be seen in character here underneath all that make-up as the premiere Skrull in this image.
Of course, fans fully expect the Skrulls’ role in Captain Marvel to lead to many more appearances in the future of the MCU. In particular, it’s hoped that there’ll be a Secret Invasion storyline happening in Phase Four, adapting the thrilling comic arc which saw the shapeshifters infiltrating the ranks of the Avengers and the government.
Before that occurs, though, the galaxy’s latest defender, Carol Danvers, will have to defeat the aliens with her extreme superpowers when Captain Marvel arrives in cinemas on March 8th, 2019.
