After an impressive theatrical run – which saw the Ari Aster-directed feature gross nearly $75 million on a production budget of just $10 million – Hereditary, arguably the scariest family drama to ever unfold on the big screen, has finally been given a street date, and it’ll arrive just in time for Halloween.
That’s right, according to Bloody Disgusting, Hereditary, the latest modern-day horror masterstroke from A24 – who also brought us The Witch, The Killing of a Sacred Deer and It Comes at Night – will arrive on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on September 4th.
Unfortunately, Ari Aster’s three-hour-long director’s cut won’t be accompanying the theatrical version into your movie collection. However, the home video release will include nine deleted scenes, in addition to a never before seen feature entitled Cursed: The True Nature of Hereditary and an exclusive photo gallery.
Said to have been inspired by several classic horror films, such as Carrie and Rosemary’s Baby, Hereditary has been dubbed “this generation’s The Exorcist.” It received a rave reception upon premiering at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and currently has an average rating of 8.2 on the Tomatometer, not to mention it’s certified Fresh.
Following the passing of Ellen, the Graham family matriarch, Hereditary shadows her daughter Annie (Toni Collette), son-in-law Steve (Gabriel Byrne) and their children, Peter (Alex Wolff) and Charlie (Milly Shapiro) as they begin to “unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry.”
Featuring an award-worthy performance from Toni Collette, and an unforgettable turn from newcomer Milly Shapiro, Hereditary is unquestionably the most unsettling film to receive a theatrical release in 2018 thus far and is being praised as the scariest horror movie in years.
The only question that remains now, is, will you be inviting the horror that lies within your lineage into your home come September? Let us know in the comments section down below.
