Superman’s blessed with one of the strongest comic book rogues galleries around, but the Last Son of Krypton’s movies have still tended to just reuse the same characters over and over again: Lex Luthor and General Zod. And Doomsday, in Batman V Superman‘s case. For the touted Man of Steel 2, then, the filmmakers of the DCEU have a wide canvas to chose from when deciding upon the next nemesis for the Big Blue Boy Scout.
That said, there’s probably one villain most fans would pick as their dream MoS 2 bad guy: the city-stealing android Brainiac. The Coluan collector of knowledge has dogged Kal-El’s life for decades on the page but has yet to make his cinematic debut. It turns out Brainiac is Henry Cavill’s own choice of antagonist as well. While talking to FANDOM, the Superman star called him a “great villain” and “a big threat.”
“I think a great villain would be Brainiac, that’d be a good villain to play against. Brainiac’s a big threat. There’s a lot of fun. There’s a lot of storylines to him.”
Now could be the perfect time to bring Brainiac to the movies, as the character has just had his first truly faithful live-action adaptation in Syfy’s Krypton, in which he was played by Blake Ritson in season 1. Hopefully this wasn’t one of those cases where the DC TV folks only got hold of the villain because the movie division wasn’t interested in using him.
Still, it’s probably best not getting too excited about seeing Brainiac in the DCEU as we don’t even know if Man of Steel 2 is actually on the cards. Rumors say an announcement’s imminent, with a release date of 2020 expected, but Christopher McQuarrie – the forerunner for the director’s job – recently ruled himself out of the running. Maybe we’ll hear something this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con? If we do, we’ll be sure to let you know.
