So with the casting of the major characters now pretty much complete and principal photography underway, Warner Bros has unleashed the first official look at Henry Cavill as Superman in Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel. Any worries about Cavill’s casting should pretty much fade away as he really does look the part.
The presence of Christopher Nolan, as producer and writer, has clearly had an impact on the look. The vivid primary colours of Superman’s usual costume have been toned down and the publicity still does look a bit more grim and realistic. It still however maintains that Snyder trait of things looking real but also tacky and fake.
Cavill has also discussed the role with Total Film (via Screen Rant) and talked about his preparation to get to the size needed for the powerful superhero:
I’m on 5000 calories a day… You’ve got to eat protein first, then a little bit of carbs…you’ve gotta keep your hunger levels going. I’m training two and a half hours a day, pushing my body beyond its normal limits, putting on a lot of muscle mass and just making myself look like Superman.
He also discussed putting on that costume for the first time:
It’s extremely cool. There’s no other feeling like it… They just put it on, I turned around and look in the mirror and you can’t really play it cool – you sort of guffaw and laugh. I thought ‘OK, holy hell, this is real, it’s not a joke anymore. This is it…you’re doing it, you’re right in the middle of it.
Man of Steel however does boast a fantastic cast which includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Kevin Costner & Diane Lane as the adoptive Kent parents, Russell Crowe & Julia Ormond as Superman’s true parents, Michael Shannon as General Zod and Laurence Fishburne as Daily Planet editor Perry White.
Man of Steel will hit theatres on June 14th 2013. You can expect to see and hear more from the film in the coming months as production heats up.
