He’s the leading light of the DC universe but we don’t know right now when we’ll next see Superman on the big screen. Though Justice League featured the Man of Steel reborn as a brighter, more traditional take on the superhero who believes in truth but is also a big fan of justice, DC hasn’t yet gotten the wheels turning on a second solo movie for Henry Cavill’s Last Son of Krypton.
If the actor gets his way, however, he knows which comic book storyline he’d like to see adapted for Man of Steel 2. Cavill, who’s known to be a big fan of the hero and an avid comic book reader, named Superman: For Tomorrow as his pick for the basis of a sequel. When speaking to Square Mile, he described the tale as “one of my favourite comic books” and talked about how he wants to tell stories like that in the DCEU.
“I would definitely like to tell a story like that. There’s an opportunity to keep on telling Superman stories, and getting them exactly right. Showing the things like hope and joy and that wonderful power of his to make people believe in themselves.”
For those who don’t know, For Tomorrow was penned by Brian Azzarello and and illustrated by the legendary Jim Lee back in 2004-2005. It features Superman exploring his own sense of guilt and loss when a million people – including Lois Lane – inexplicably disappear off the face of the Earth. There are many twists and developments that we won’t spoil, but you can see how the shape of the story could work in the DCEU. It certainly has a high-concept premise, of the sort that worked well for Marvel in Avengers: Infinity War.
Before we get a Man of Steel 2, however, there’s a chance that Henry Cavill may first appear for a brief cameo as Superman in another movie. Word has it that he’s set to don his blue tights again for 2019’s Shazam!, though this has yet to be confirmed by the studio. As soon as we learn more, though, we’ll be sure to let you know.
