Despite being a very promising project, Universal pulled the plug last year on Guillermo del Toro’s film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness. Instead, the director went on to direct Pacific Rim, which is hitting theatres in just a few months. And while many may assume that any possibility of the director returning to his failed project is off the table, there does seem to be a glimpse of hope for those still wanting to see At The Mountains of Madness hit the big screen.
In a recent interview with The Playlist, del Toro says that he will try the film once more and that Tom Cruise is still attached.
“I’m going to try it one more time. Once more into the dark abyss. We’re gonna do a big presentation of the project again at the start of the year and see if any [studio’s] interested…Yeah, Tom [Cruise] is still attached. I think it would be so fantastic to make it with him. He’s been such a great ally of the project.”
Of course, this is in no way confirmation that the film will get off the ground but it does inspire hope as it seems that del Toro still wants to make the film. That, coupled with the positive buzz surrounding Pacific Rim, should give the director a good shot at getting this made. It’s likely that Warner Bros. and Legendary will finance it too given the fact that Pacific Rim will probably be a hit for them.
We’ll likely hear more news on At The Mountains of Madness once del Toro’s robots vs. aliens epic is released but for now, we can only keep our fingers crossed and hope that the director can one day bring his dream project to the big screen.
What do you think? Will Pacific Rim be a hit? Will del Toro ever get to make At The Mountains of Madness?
