It’s probably not a huge surprise given Marvel Studios’ penchant for pumping out sequels, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has now confirmed that very early plans are indeed in place for a third installment.
Up to this point, Gunn has seemed to be on the fence in regards to his involvement in any future GOTG films, but during a recent interview with Complex, the filmmaker stated that he and Marvel would be “trying to figure it out” over the next few weeks:
There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out,” said Gunn. “I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.
If you’re thinking this might be an instance of Gunn and the studio counting their Baby Groots before they’ve hatched, keep in mind that current long range forecasts for Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 predict that the sequel will not only be one of the biggest comic book releases of the year, but could well have one of the biggest openings of all-time.
Gunn certainly seems very confident that a third film will happen at some point, and while he doesn’t sound as certain that he’ll return to helm it, if Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 performs as well as it’s expected to, one would assume Marvel will do everything in their power to convince him to stick around.
