Not that we thought his story was all sunshine and rainbows beforehand, but a subtle detail hidden in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 emphasizes just how much trauma Rocket Raccoon has been through in his troubled life. Bradley Cooper’s fan-favorite furball was at the heart of the recent threequel, which explored his tragic origins at the hands of the High Evolutionary, and while Rocket adjusted in many ways thanks to his time with the Guardians, he never quite got over his tough childhood.
A mega-fan who’s seen Guardians 3 five times at the theater already took to Twitter to ask James Gunn about the significance of Rocket’s room on Knowhere being “so… minimalist.” Specifically, they wanted to know why Rocket elects to “sleep on an iron panel.” Obviously, given that this is the guy who put us through all the emotional anguish of what happened to Lylla, Floor, and Teefs in Vol. 3, Gunn’s response tugged at our heartstrings.
“You saw what he was raised sleeping on,” the director explained. “It’s what he’s become accustomed to.”
We’d like to think that, after he somewhat puts his trauma behind him by the end of the threequel, a nice comfy bed is waiting in Rocket’s future. Especially seeing as he can nab himself Star-Lord’s old quarters now that Peter Quill has returned to Earth and Rocket is the captain of the all-new, all-different Guardians (including the Captain Marvel-trumping Phyla-Vell). Get yourself a mattress, pal, you deserve it.
