When James Gunn got out of bed yesterday morning, he was probably in a pretty great mood. After all, the man’s responsible for two of the most beloved movies in the MCU, is about to start work on the finale of his trilogy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and was set to lead a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con to promote a new horror film he’s producing.
Just a couple of hours later, however, he’d found himself the victim of a far-right attack campaign that’s seen him sacked from the company he’s made billions of dollars for (Disney) and booted from the franchise he’s poured his heart into. It was news that almost broke the internet and everyone’s still reeling from it – including Dave Bautista.
The actor, best known for his role as Drax the Destroyer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, worked with Gunn on both Guardians and its sequel and is set to return for Vol. 3, too. Turns out that he’s not alright with what Disney did and taking to Twitter, he made that known.
“I will have more to say but for right now all I will say is this..@JamesGunn is one of the most loving, caring, good natured people I have ever met,” wrote Bautista. “He’s gentle and kind and cares deeply for people and animals. He’s made mistakes. We all have. Im NOT ok with what’s happening to him.”
We couldn’t agree more with the actor and cannot understand why this has happened. I mean, Gunn’s Tweets and comments were widely discussed before Guardians of the Galaxy was released, so it’s bizarre that the studio has not only decided to only act on them now, but also throw one of the best creative minds under the bus and let production on one of their biggest upcoming films descend into chaos.
Nobody’s going to come out of this situation looking good and you can bet there’s going to be an enormously angry fan campaign battling to reinstate Gunn – and if I know MCU fans, it’ll eclipse whatever anger the far right can muster.
