Not too long ago, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 looked to be on indefinite hiatus. Last summer, James Gunn was removed as director after a Twitter controversy and it seemed like a suitable replacement couldn’t be found. To the surprise and delight of many Marvel fans, though, Gunn was reinstated on the threequel back in March. Still, no official word was made on how soon the conclusion to the Guardians trilogy would arrive.
Some new alleged info about Marvel Studios’ plans for Phase Four, though, promises that it won’t be too far away. Reddit user TheMarvelScoopMaster has been sharing some interesting intel of late, with his most recent comments concerning the next few films coming in the MCU. In response to a fan theorizing that Black Panther 2 and Spider-Man 3 would arrive before Guardians 3, the Redditor said:
“Guardians 3 is a high priority for the studio. Those films will come shortly after.”
This fits with previous reports on the topic. As fans will know, Gunn is currently busy gearing up to make The Suicide Squad for DC. That shoots later this year before its scheduled release date of 2021. Now that Gunn’s back on board, other sources have said that he could be a very busy man over the next few years and begin filming GotG Vol. 3 soon after TSS wraps in 2020. This could mean that Guardians may also drop in 2021.
Before the whole Gunn fiasco occurred, Guardians 3 would have released in 2020 with filming beginning in late 2018. As the first two movies have been amongst the most successful in the MCU’s canon though, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all if TheMarvelScoopMaster’s info is genuine and Kevin Feige and co. want to get the threequel back on track as soon as possible.
In any case, we know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is rumored to introduce a bunch of new characters, including Adam Warlock, Quasar, Beta Ray Bill, Moondragon and the High Evolutionary (possibly played by Mark Hamill), and as soon as we get some concrete details on its release date, we’ll be sure to let you know.
