It’s not like we need anymore proof that Marvel has another mega hit on their hands with James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The first film was an absolute home run for the studio and with everyone returning for more, chances were always pretty good that the sequel could match its predecessor. Now, as the marketing campaign continues on in full swing, it’s looking very possible that Vol. 2 may actually surpass the original.
After an explosive Super Bowl spot the other week, which was one of the best previews shown during the big game, we’re now getting more reassurance of just how awesome this movie is going to be. It comes in the form of reactions to test screenings, which have been taking place internally at Marvel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn’s sequel is scoring 100, which is apparently extremely rare.
To date, the studio’s two highest scored films are Iron Man 3 and The Avengers, and those only reached the high 90s, not 100. From what we understand, these test screenings are made up of friends and family, so they’re not entirely representative of what the general public may think, but still, with a score of 100, you have to imagine that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is going to be a damn good film.
Sure, test screenings, no matter who they’re made up of, don’t always prove to be accurate, but in this case, we’re feeling pretty confident that audiences will feel the same way as those “friends and family” do when they finally get a chance to check out the sequel this May. After all, there’s really no reason to think that Gunn won’t be able to recapture the magic of Guardians of the Galaxy, as everything he’s told us so far – and he’s shared quite a bit – sounds extremely promising.
With new characters, new adventures, new villains and, of course, Baby Groot (!), all signs point to this sequel being bigger, better and more crowd-pleasing than what came before. We can only hope we’re still saying the same thing after watching Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in full on May 5th.
