Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a great movie, but it’s fair to say that the highlight is Baby Groot. The adorable sentient tree steals the show from start to finish, with even his actions in the background of scenes making the sequel well worth another watch. By the time all is said and done, Baby Groot has become Teenage Groot, and his appearance in Avengers: Infinity War will no doubt be different once again.
Now, in light of the film’s success, concept artist Josh Herman has shared some of his early designs for Baby Groot and they’re a little different to what we got in the final product. Here’s what the artist had to say about his take on the fan-favourite hero for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
“Baby Groot was super fun to work on! When we were told that he was going to be a toddler, I wanted to try doing some concepts with props in them to help in him looking more like child. It was a really fun project and very happy to show these.”
It’s clear that this Baby Groot would have been quite a bit larger and pretty much the size of a two or three-year-old child. That certainly would have been interesting to see, but the tiny version we ended up getting on the big screen was arguably an even better – and cuter – direction for him. Not to mention that Disney and Marvel look set to make a huge amount of money thanks to Baby Groot merchandise, so they’re no doubt very happy with James Gunn’s creative decision for the movie.
