Not everyone attended the LA premiere of the Barbie movie, and Greta Gerwig understood why that was the case. Out of everyone who appeared at the Shrine Auditorium, a crucial crew member was absent due to a significant cause.

Deadline reported that Gerwig arrived solo at the Barbie premiere without her partner and the film’s co-writer and co-creator, Noah Baumbach. She told the press that her partner couldn’t make it because he is currently supporting the ongoing Writers’ strike. She praised her partner’s commitment to supporting the Writers Guild of America since she also believes that Hollywood would be nothing without its writers.

“My co-writer and co-creator, my partner in love and art, Noah Baumbach is not here. He is passionately supporting the fight of the Writers Guild of America. From the first line to the last cut, this movie is his as much as anyone’s. He is a Barbie girl. Nothing in Barbie happened without him, and nothing in Hollywood happens without writers.”

The 2023 Writers’ strike began on May 2, 2023, because the Writers Guild of America couldn’t land a deal with broadcast and streaming networks. This ongoing strike has halted productions and delayed auditions for TV programs. Meanwhile, celebrities have supported these writers who help make the shows possible. Writers have a list of demands they want to be fulfilled or agreed upon by these media companies. One of them is the use of AI and how writers want to avoid this technology being implemented in the writers’ room.

Barbie is one of the highly-anticipated films this summer and will compete against Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer at the box office. This film adaptation of the popular toy line has a massive A-list cast ensemble, starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. Also joining them are Emma Mackey, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Will Ferrell, and Helen Mirren.

Barbie is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
