Christopher McQuarrie’s next mission, should he choose to accept it, will be to direct Green Lantern Corps for Warner Bros. and DC Films.
That Hashtag Show has the scoop, claiming that the Mission: Impossible and Jack Reacher filmmaker is being courted by Warner Bros. for their in-development Hal Jordan/John Stewart buddy cop movie – presumably at the expense of Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), who was reportedly in the frame to direct late last year.
Going one step further, THS also theorizes that McQuarrie’s involvement in Green Lantern Corps may open up a path for Tom Cruise to enter the DC Extended Universe. If that’s the case, and Warner Bros. somehow manages to convince Cruise to join another shared universe – one need only look to The Mummy for evidence of the Dark Universe’s failings – then he’ll likely play the part of a supporting character, given the Powers That Be are said to be on the lookout for a relatively young actor(s) to take on the role of Hal Jordan. Ditto for John Stewart.
Alas, barring some truly fantastic concept art, the Emerald Knight’s maiden voyage in the DCEU has been draped in secrecy. Seasoned screenwriter David S. Goyer is adamant that the project is still making progress at Warner Bros., while the likes of Armie Hammer, Ricky Whittle (American Gods) and Tyrese Gibson have emerged as potential candidates for the title roles. Take those speculative casting tidbits with a pinch of salt, though, as Warner Bros. is yet to announce anything official at the time of going to press.
What we do know is that the studio has currently reserved two release dates in 2020: February 14th and June 5th, so it’s nigh on certain that Green Lantern Corps will slot into one, leaving the other to Cyborg – you know, assuming Ray Fisher’s android hero still has enough clout to headline a solo movie of his own after the disastrous Justice League.
