While Gotham has had its ups and downs over the years, lately it feels like it’s found its groove with season 4, which has taken inspiration from classic Batman stories like The Long Halloween, Year One and No Man’s Land. One consistent highlight over the four seasons has been Camren Bicondova’s Selina Kyle aka Catwoman. The character’s appearance in the show has differed from almost every portrayal across TV, comics and film by showing Kyle growing up.
Bicondova was only 15 when she began playing the part, so it’s safe to say she’s got a better understanding of her than most. And, were Warner Bros. interested in a little cross-media pollination, she’d be a great candidate to portray Catwoman on the big screen in the upcoming Gotham City Sirens.
In fact, Revenge of the Fans mentioned the prospect of her taking the role in an interview with the actress to mark the end of season 4, to which she responded:
Uh, yeah! Heck yeah. That’d be amazing. I think playing her on television has been great. But with movies you can take a little more time. Some people complain that Selina doesn’t get enough screen time on Gotham.
I think she gets plenty, but I know it can feel rushed sometimes because with a television show there’s just so many things they have to do, and- a lot of the times- since she’s more of an observer and not a talker, it can feel like she’s not around much. But if I were able to play her in a film, I think that those moments that she’s known for could actually be expressed a little better, since the focus would be on her.
So, pretty enthusiastic, right? Catwoman done properly can be seriously iconic stuff, with Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt’s time in the role in the 60s TV show ruffling feathers up and down the country on its original broadcast.
Michelle Pfieffer’s take on the character in 1992’s Batman Returns similarly stuck in the mind, with her whacked out bird-eating bondage chic blowing Michael Keaton’s Batman and Danny DeVito’s Penguin right off the screen. By comparison, Anne Hathaway’s turn in The Dark Knight Rises felt a little flat.
There’s definitely room for another star-making Catwoman on the big screen, and Bicondova seems to have what it takes. But can she fight off every other hot young actress in Hollywood to get what has to be one of the most plum roles around? We’ll see, and as soon as we hear more about Gotham City Sirens, we’ll be sure to let you know.
