Eli Roth is one of the biggest names in mainstream horror right now, thanks to the success of his Hostel and Cabin Fever franchises. His fingerprints are also all over many other projects, from Netflix series Hemlock Grove to The Last Exorcism, the upcoming Knock Knock and WE tv’s recently announced South of Hell series. However, Roth’s next film in theaters will actually be his long-anticipated cannibal flick, The Green Inferno.
Gore aficionados have been waiting patiently for this movie, and they’ll finally get to see it this September on the big screen. But until it arrives in theaters, at least they will have this thrilling, highly disturbing trailer to make the wait a little more bearable. Check it out below:
In an interesting twist, the protagonists in Roth’s latest aren’t mutton-headed jocks and sluts but well-meaning college students out of New York City. On their way to the Amazon to help a local tribe threatened by deforestation, the students’ plane crashes in the wilderness. Quickly, they become the captives of the very tribe they were trying to protect – though the natives’ intentions towards them are nowhere near as pure. All kinds of horrific bloodletting ensues.
Of course, in typical Roth fashion, all the gore comes with a healthy helping of dark humor, and we get hints of that in the trailer. It appears he’s taking square aim at the recent ‘slacktivist’ trend in American culture, cannibal films like Cannibal Holocaust and Natura contro, and our culture’s fascination with “saving” outsiders.
The cast isn’t particularly well-known, though one would imagine that’s pretty much standard for gritty, no-holds-barred horror fare like this. Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, Daryl Sabara (aka Juni from Spy Kids), Kirby Bliss Blanton, Sky Ferreira and Magda Apanowicz star.
