We’re only a few days away from the release of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which finds everybody’s favorite atomic lizard fighting off the likes of Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidora, and fans could not be more excited. While we don’t even know if our titular character makes it out of the sequel alive, those behind the movie are already hyping up the next big battle of Legendary’s MonsterVerse: Godzilla Vs. Kong.
Michael Dougherty, the writer and director of this weekend’s Godzilla sequel, is also returning to co-write Godzilla Vs. Kong, and he’s well aware that some are already counting the giant ape out:
“We’re looking at an almost David vs. Goliath situation. Because everyone, the moment you say Godzilla’s going to fight Kong, your first reaction is Kong doesn’t stand a chance. Godzilla’s got his radioactive breath, et cetera, et cetera. But then if you really take the time to look at Kong as a character, it’s like, okay, in Skull Island he was an adolescent, so he was still growing. So who knows how big he is since the 1970s when they first met him?
Kong is extremely intelligent. As a primate, he’s a tool-user. So he’s got speed, he’s got agility, he might have some good size. And I like a good underdog battle. You know, it’s like watching Rocky go up against Ivan Drago. It seems like it’s unfair but clearly, this means the underdog might have a few surprises.”
It’s true, the young Kong was quite scrappy in Skull Island, taking on multiple viscous Skullcrawlers and walking away victorious. Despite being about 30m tall in the 1970s—a paltry sight compared to ‘Zilla’s 100-plus meter height—audiences caught a glimpse of a few massive ape skulls in the 2017 movie, so we know he’s had ample time to grow into an even more sizeable fighter.
Then again, not only is Godzilla taking on well over a dozen massive Kaiju in this weekend’s sequel, but we pretty much know victory is guaranteed—why else would we be talking about this fight in the first place? Filmmakers behind the follow up are going to have to pull quite a few tricks for us to believe Kong stands a chance where a giant three-headed dragon did not.
Godzilla Vs. Kong is set for release on March 13th, 2020, but which of these massive monsters do you think will reign supreme? Let us know in the comments below, and be sure to check back for our thoughts on Godzilla: King of the Monsters, in theaters this weekend.
