While you can hopefully expect some exciting revelations to come out of this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros., for the time being, remain committed to their less-is-more strategy of generating hype for next year’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Specifically, rather than giving us our first looks at Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah – the three gigantic beasts with whom the star of 2014’s Godzilla will be trading blows – recent promotion for the upcoming monster movie has instead chosen one of the film’s smallest characters as its focus: the young Madison Russell, played by Millie Bobby Brown.
Not only is the Stranger Things actress the sole living being – human or otherwise – to be seen in the flick’s first teaser trailer, but she’s also the only character to feature on the new cover photo for King of the Monsters’ Facebook page, unless you count the hulking shape of the king himself in the distant background.
The poster sports the movie’s brand new, blue logo, along with the ominous tagline: “THEIR REIGN BEGINS.” It’s a fitting choice of words, given the beastly royalty at the center of this film. The king of the monsters will have to earn his crown in a fight with King Ghidorah, and even Mothra was worshipped as a goddess in ancient times according to the newly released character descriptions.
While it’s so far unclear whether anyone’s ever considered poor old Rodan to be worthy of worship, the fact that the secretive organization in charge of tracking these creatures is called Monarch makes the royalty motif all the more apparent. You have to wonder what what fellow MonsterVerse resident Kong thinks of all this, seeing how the big ape was being called “King” before anyone had even heard of these other guys.
But again, all these kingly and queenly creatures are going to have to wait their turn, because for now, the promotional spotlight belongs to Millie Bobby Brown, who’s probably in for a pretty rough time when Godzilla: King of the Monsters stomps into cinemas on May 31st, 2019.
