Thor: Ragnarok is, at the time of writing, between three and four weeks from wrapping up principal photography Down Under, according to director Taika Waititi.
Hosting a Reddit AMA on Saturday evening, the New Zealand filmmaker solicited scores of questions from budding fans. Waititi began by referencing the 1980s-inspired logo (see above), and how it reflects the old-school vibe of Ragnarok. First showcased at San Diego Comic-Con in the summer, the director noted that the official branding takes cues from science fiction of the ’70s and ’80s, before going on to claim that the 2017 threequel will be one of the “most ‘out there’ of all the Marvel movies” which, in a universe that is about to welcome one Doctor Strange, is quite the statement.
Per Reddit: “I think [Thor: Ragnarok] will be one of the most adventurous and most ‘out there’ of all the Marvel movies. It’s a crazy movie.”
[zergpaid]Coming off What We Do in the Shadows and the rather excellent Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Waititi was considered a left-field choice for the gig – a trend that has been typical of the MCU – but it seems the director is thinking outside the box for Thor: Ragnarok, revealing that he is “trying to ignore the rest of the universe and just make my own awesome movie.”
Don’t expect many ties to either the original Thor or The Dark World, either, after Waititi stated, “I made an effort to ignore the fact that there are other Thor films.” There will be some “references” to Doctor Strange, though, likely expanding on the post-credits sequence included in Scott Derrickson’s imminent feature.
Thor: Ragnarok is slated to land on November 3, 2017 when Waititi fully expects Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner to steal the show. So, just like Joss Whedon’s Avengers then?
