After learning that Lionsgate was in negotiations with director Gary Ross to return and direct the second film in The Hunger Games series, Catching Fire, we’ve now received news that negotiations have fallen through and unfortunately, Ross will not be directing the second film in Lionsgate’s mega-blockbuster franchise.

As we reported earlier this week, the director was getting greedy. He wanted more money and understandably so. The Hunger Games has made over $350 million worldwide so far and it’s not stopping anytime soon. That, coupled with the fact that he has an Oscar nod under his belt (for Seabiscuit), made Ross think that he had a substantial amount of bargaining power.

Apparently, it’s not all about the money though. Insiders say that Ross just doesn’t have a a “burning desire” to spend a couple more years with the series. Plus, he already has another project in the works that will take up most of his time over the next little while.

Now the obvious question is who will direct the sequel? It’s a huge job and one that would be a daunting task for almost any director to take on. Whoever steps into the role, they have a lot to live up to. Ross gave fans a fantastic adaptation and everyone is expecting a sequel of similar quality as well as a sequel that will perform just as well.

Let us know in the comments who you think should direct.
