Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman must really like each other. The duo have given us Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Dark Knight Rises and Lawless. Now, they look to be teaming up again for director Daniel Espinosa’s Child 44, a film that is shaping up to be very, very promising.
Produced by Ridley Scott, the story follows “a disgraced MGB agent (Hardy) in the 1950s Soviet Union investigating a prolific child murderer who may have connections going to the very top of the party leadership.”
Oldman is set to play a member of the secret police who also happens to be a suspect in the case. Noomi Rapace and Joel Kinnaman, who joined earlier this week, will also be starring in the film.
Anytime Oldman joins a film, my heart jumps a bit. I literally love this guy and he’s one of Hollywood’s best. There’s really no reason to explain why Gary Oldman is so great but to see what he’s capable of, watch his stirring performance in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Or any other film of his for that matter. His previous efforts with Hardy have all been excellent (Lawless aside) and I’m eager to see them on screen together again.
Based off the book by Tom Rob Smith and scripted by Richard Price, filming is set to get underway this summer. Before then, expect to hear more on the casting front as Child 44 seems to be drawing the attention of some of Hollywood’s top talent, and deservedly so. I didn’t love Espinosa’s Safe House but this project certainly has me intrigued and I’m curious to see how it continues to shape up.
