Gary Oldman is fast becoming the man of the moment with his role in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, courting universal acclaim. Colin Firth is currently one of the most sought after actors after having won everyone’s heart in The King’s Speech.
The two will both be on screen together in the aforementioned spy thriller which could well make Oldman Firth’s successor to the Oscar throne. Beyond that though, Oldman has plans to return behind the camera and have Firth be his leading man.
His last stint behind the camera came nearly 15 years ago now with the gritty British drama Nil by Mouth. A vicious and very difficult film, but supposedly a deeply personal one for Oldman. That film did show a flair for both direction and writing on his behalf and told us that he should do more work behind the scenes.
Recently, he told the Daily Mail that:
I think I’m gonna do something with Colin Firth. It was something I’d been thinking about for a while, I can’t say what it is, but it’s a remake, and when I worked with Colin [on Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy] I thought: here’s the guy to do it with.
The prospect of Gary Oldman doing a remake with Colin Firth suggests that this won’t be one of those unnecessary remakes. Of course until we know what the film is we can’t make that judgement but with Oldman’s particular nature and his trepidation to direct, things should turn out alright. Plus, after becoming a global star, Firth will also be particularly picky with the material he chooses. So I’m intrigued to hear more on this project.
We’ll definitely bring more news as we get it.
In the meantime we can wait to see the two together on screen in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy which gets released in the US on December 9th.
