It’s been a pretty good month for Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards. After releasing Warner Bros.’ monster movie to critical acclaim and impressive box office numbers, a sequel was quickly given the green light. Now, his good luck continues as he’s been hired to direct the first Star Wars spinoff film for Disney, which will land on December 16th, 2016. Gary Whitta, perhaps best known for The Book of Eli, is set to pen the script. At this time though, we’re not sure which characters the story will revolve around.
“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm,” said Edwards.
“From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true. I’m still pinching myself,” Whitta added.
The report does mention that Edwards is still tied to Godzilla 2 and Godzilla 3, but neither of those will conflict with his Star Wars spinoff as both of those films are still in the very early stages of development and don’t even have a script yet. So, it looks like for his next outing, Edwards will be travelling to a galaxy far, far away.
