The great thing about the Arrowverse is that with it being so expansive, it hasn’t limited itself to live action television and, in the past few years, it’s also spilled over into the comic book realm as well as animation. When it comes to the latter, much success was found with Vixen, which was first presented as a web series that spanned two seasons before being cut together as one seamless direct-to-video movie.
Having gotten a taste for exploring other characters and possibilities that the TV shows may not have the time or budget for, the producers have since decided to branch out with their latest endeavor, that being Freedom Fighters: The Ray.
Serving as a prelude of sorts to last fall’s epic crossover that was “Crisis on Earth-X,” the home video release presents the animated web series as a feature-length film, much like the aforementioned Vixen. And in case you’re wondering when you can get your hands on a copy, know that August 28 marks its arrival on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital, so be sure to mark your calendar.
For more details regarding the plot itself, be sure to check out the official synopsis:
All his life, Ray Terrill has fought injustice, dreaming of making a real difference like his older brother, a Marine who was killed in Afghanistan. One day, he stumbles upon a dying Super Hero from another Earth and is stunned to find that this Super Hero looks just like him—because it is! The dying Ray Terrill of Earth-X transfers photokinetic energy to this Earth’s Ray, making him a Super Hero – The Ray. However, Ray quickly learns being a Super Hero isn’t all hanging muggers from streetlamps and fighting giant robots. As the evil Nazi New Reichsman of Earth-X, led by Overgirl, close in, The Ray must learn to harness his powers by coming to terms with his true self, even if that means also finally coming out of the closet to his parents. The fate of Earth-X depends on it!
As of now, no bonus features have been detailed, so it’s very possible that the feature presentation will be the only thing included on the disc. Still, we wouldn’t rule out a couple cartoons serving as supplemental material, as was the case with Vixen.
