Though you may not think so, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Doctor Who have a lot in common. Aside from them both being highly enjoyable and popular franchises, they also share a lot of the same actors. Most notably, we’ve seen Christopher Eccleston, Karen Gillan, David Tennant and Jenna Coleman all hold roles in each, but it might not end there. At least, not if Matt Smith has his way.
While appearing at Fan Expo in Toronto this weekend, the Eleventh Doctor was asked whether or not he’d be interested in joining some of his Who co-stars over in the MCU, and here’s how he replied:
“I’d love to. They’ve gotta ask me though, the swines.” the actor joked. “But it would have to be the right project. It would have to be something that felt different enough to Doctor Who. I love so many of those movies and I love Nebula, because Karen’s blue. With no hair. Anyway, I’d love to… If you’re listening, Marvel.”
While Smith has been linked to a role in the upcoming Venom spinoff, that film isn’t in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Rather, it’s part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe, which is a separate beast. As such, he could certainly appear in both without any real conflict. It’s also important to note that this is far from the first time that the actor’s expressed interest in joining the franchise.
To date, there’s been no reports of Marvel Studios eyeing him for any of their movies, but he’d certainly be a good fit for a number of characters. In the past, fans have suggested Mephisto, Kang the Conqueror and Moon Knight, who’s actually rumored to be getting introduced into the MCU quite soon. Of course, none of those individuals have been confirmed for big or small screen adaptations just yet, but if they wanted him, Marvel could definitely find a role for Matt Smith.
Whether the former Doctor Who star’s comments here ever lead to anything remains to be seen, but if he were to one day join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which hero, villain or supporting part would you like to see him play? Let us know in the usual place!
