Even though it was somewhat expected, Peter Jackson‘s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will get an extended edition release for home video sometime in the fourth quarter of 2013, according to TheOneRing.
This will be done in a similar manner to when Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy was released in its extended edition format on Blu-Ray/DVD.
The announcement of an extended edition of the film is very intriguing due to the fact that Peter Jackson had previously announced that The Hobbit films were going to be extended from two to three. Will the director have enough film footage to justify not only extending The Hobbit films to a trilogy but also to keep fans interested in purchasing extended editions of the films? Only time will tell but it should be interesting to see how much content Jackson can mine from The Hobbit and J.R.R. Tolkien’s appendices.
It’s hard to complain about having the opportunity to see more of this story on film, especially in the hands of Peter Jackson. I’m hopeful that the extended release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be just as pleasing as the extended editions of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which I found to be well worth the watch.
The release date of the extended home video edition should coincide with the theatrical release of the second film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in late 2013.
What do you think of this news? Excited to see more of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey?
